Setting up: Kits, Bundles, and Phantom BOMs
MRPeasy supports two main types of kits:
1. Product kit or bundle
A product kit is a bundle of products sold together. When a Manufacturing Order is created for the kit, MRPeasy automatically completes it as soon as all required components are available in stock.
2. Material kit or phantom BOM
A material kit is a group of parts that are used together in manufacturing. It can be preassembled and stocked or included as a virtual subassembly in a multi-level Manufacturing Order. In the latter case, it is also known as a phantom BOM.
Kitting can also be used to convert a product with your internal part number into an item with a customer-specific part number.
To set up a kit item:
- Set “This is a procured item” to No.
- Add a BOM containing the kit components.
- Do not add a Routing.

Hi! In this video, we will explain how kitting and auto-assembly work in MRPeasy.
A kit is an item that consists of several components that are bundled together and treated as a single product.
For example, we can create a furniture set that includes one table and four chairs.
A kit item:
has a bill of materials that defines its components,
is not set up as a procured item,
and does not have any routing or production operations.
Because no manufacturing operations are required, MRPeasy does not treat a kit as a normally manufactured item. Instead, the kit is automatically assembled from its components when they are available in stock.
One common use case is selling kits to customers.
When a customer orders a kit, you can create a manufacturing order for the kit. Since the kit does not require any production operations, the order will be completed automatically once all required components are available.
This allows you to see whether the kit is ready for shipment or whether some components are still missing.
Kits can also be prepared in advance.
If you keep kits in stock, you can manually create manufacturing orders. These orders will remain open until all required components are available, and then the kit will be automatically assembled into stock.
Kits can also be used as sub-assemblies inside larger products.
For example, a complex product may contain a sub-assembly that is a kit and does not require any additional manufacturing operations. In this case, the kit acts as a phantom BOM, helping to organize complex product structures while simplifying production planning.
Another useful application is handling customer-specific part numbers.
For example, you can create a customer-specific item that contains your standard product as its only component. The customer-specific item can then be used with the customer’s required part number while internally referring to your original product.
Kitting is easy to set up and offers a flexible way to manage bundled products, simplify product structures, and streamline order fulfillment.
