Change is difficult to manage, there is lots of training to be done and new systems often have trouble adapting legacy knowledge into a new process-oriented framework.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As a result, no two implementations are alike.&nbsp; Implementing a new ERP has been compared to two different artists working on the same piece of music.&nbsp; Just as the sound and emphasis may come across differently depending on the artist, an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mrpeasy.com\/enterprise-resource-planning\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"ERP system (opens in a new tab)\">ERP system<\/a> using the same source code can result in very different experiences.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">At the end of the day, the key to a <strong>successful manufacturing ERP implementation relies on assembling the right team<\/strong>.&nbsp;With the right mix of key players, there will still be a lot of hard work and many challenges, but it can be done much as a well-orchestrated performance of an artist\u2019s music.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Why_ERP_Teams_Fail\"><\/span>Why ERP Teams Fail<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A study by the Project Management Institute found that <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"http:\/\/blog.e-volvellc.com\/enterprise-software\/getting-it-right-introduction-to-enterprise-procurement-projects\/\" target=\"_blank\">60% of projects fail<\/a>.&nbsp; Sometimes the projects were doomed from the start, such as placing the purchasing decision in the wrong department or in inexperienced hands.&nbsp; Other times, a company\u2019s organizational culture is to blame, with entrenched legacy management and outdated SOPs (Standard operating procedure).&nbsp; In these cases, it is not the software that fails.&nbsp; Rather it is the lack of understanding that projects such as an ERP implementation require strong and well-organized change management as well.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Common reasons for ERP implementation failure (and large\nsoftware projects of any kind) include:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Top-heavy management where the executives are the only group making decisions and shepherding the project.<\/li><li>Lack of \u201cas is\u201d process mapping.&nbsp; This means building a broad, experienced team with clearly defined goals and the communication skills required to succeed.&nbsp; It also means that the team should be agile and adaptable and be provided with all the resources required for the job.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Important team elements include:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Team_Composition\"><\/span>Team Composition<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">An ERP implementation team should be assembled based on competency and not status.&nbsp; This may mean including less senior members over those with more tenure and managing the issues that could result from that.&nbsp; It also means blending the right amount of technical skills as well as less technical, but task or project management-oriented to ensure all aspects of the project have someone who can accomplish tasks based on their skillset.&nbsp; Team members should also include the following:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong><em>Executive Sponsor<\/em><\/strong> \u2013 An executive sponsor is critical because this person will both lend top-level authority to the project as well as acting as a bridge and buffer back to the executive group.&nbsp; This reduces the tendency for conflicting goals coming from multiple executives.<\/li><li><strong><em>Project Manager<\/em><\/strong> \u2013 Some companies have a specific person or persons in the role of project manager while smaller companies may have a key member who is good with projects.&nbsp; The important thing is to have someone in this role to manage the overall project costs, timeline, vendor interaction, and training schedules.&nbsp; <\/li><li><strong><em>Implementation Partner<\/em><\/strong> \u2013 Just as many companies leave out a project manager, others may try and use only internal skillsets to implement the system.&nbsp; But most platforms are represented by a third party or provide implementation consultation native from the software and platform provider itself.&nbsp; This is important because there is always a depth of system knowledge that an implementation provider can offer that would far exceed an internal team\u2019s ability to understand at the beginning of deployment as everyone is undergoing a steep learning curve.<\/li><li><strong><em>Report Writer<\/em><\/strong> \u2013 Many companies undertake ERP implementation and consider reports as almost an afterthought.&nbsp; But any system will need to be customized to provide the right reports for proper insight into the data and analysis the system is providing. Members of an implementation\nteam should have certain individual characteristics that will help make a\ncohesive and effective team.&nbsp;\nCharacteristics such as<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong><em>Upward Mobility<\/em><\/strong> \u2013 Upwardly mobile employees within the company are less attached to the status quo.&nbsp; They will adapt faster to change.<\/li><li><strong><em>Team Smart<\/em><\/strong> \u2013 Many people are personally smart.&nbsp; But often that does not translate into being an effective team member.&nbsp; By finding \u201cteam smart\u201d employees, the focus will be on the goals of the team and not on ego.<\/li><li><strong><em>Personal Depth<\/em><\/strong> \u2013 Emotional intelligence in the workplace manifests itself as personal depth.&nbsp; This means that while the team member may not like or agree with decisions for implementation, they understand the what and why of the decisions made.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Conclusion\"><\/span>Conclusion<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Implementing a new manufacturing ERP system will always be a challenge.&nbsp; But by assembling an implementation team with the right skills, attributes and leadership, those challenges can be managed to build a fully optimized and customized system to fit any manufacturer\u2019s needs.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>With MRP or ERP implementation, the key to a successful implementation relies on assembling the right team.
