The following questions need to be answered 24\/7 for efficient inventory control:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<!--more-->\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong>What items do you have and in which quantities?<\/strong><\/li><li><strong>Where are your items?<\/strong><\/li><li><strong>What do you need to reorder?<\/strong><\/li><li><strong>Where did the items come from and where are they going to?<\/strong><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>There is a balance to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mrpeasy.com\/inventory-management\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\">inventory management<\/a>: keeping it organized while keeping it simple. Every item in stock has to be easy to find and every worker needs to be able to find it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you have too many standing assets, it\u2019s money lying on the floor! It needs to run efficiently. There is no great benefit in over specifying your items, nor is there benefit in keeping all items in one great pile.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>You need to be able to distinguish an article from others with as little information as possible: <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong>A<\/strong> <strong>unique part number<\/strong>, which identifies it at once. Typically this is a serial number.<br>This is like a social security number: there cannot be two alike.<br>These are also what computers use to distinguish your items from one another.<\/li><li><strong>Name, group<\/strong>, manufacturer etc. <strong>This is for humans.<\/strong><\/li><li>There mustn\u2019t be two items with different part numbers, but same identifiers on stock.\n<ul><li>If it has different vendors, it\u2019s the same item.<\/li><li>If it\u2019s an analogue &#8211; and this is important information &#8211; it\u2019s a different item.<\/li><\/ul>\n<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>If your stock consists of hundreds or thousands of items, it\u2019s a pain to look up something if the grouping is not logical. It\u2019s like looking for a needle in a haystack. A group \u2018Raw materials\u2019 having 1500 items will not help you pinpoint a part.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A more specific group, \u2018Sheet metal\u2019 will narrow your search down faster. Extra identifiers like \u2018Manufacturer\u2019, \u2018Thickness\u2019 or \u2018Type\u2019 (Yes, you can add <strong>custom columns<\/strong> in MRPeasy!) will make it even easier.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Place_in_stock\"><\/span>Place in stock<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The previous point also applies to dividing your warehouse into specific units of storage.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>You need to be able to find an item from the warehouse as fast as possible with as little information as possible.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It does not make sense to have every millimeter of the warehouse specified, but also you cannot keep 300 types of screws in a 400 square foot \u2018general warehouse\u2019. You should have shelves, bins or similar, listed according to what you are storing and the size of the storage room. Keep it simple, but fast.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Units_of_Measurement_UoM\"><\/span>Units of Measurement (UoM)<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Vendors typically sell by pellets, bags, rolls, cans etc. Depending on the type of manufacturing &#8211; discrete, process or mixed \u2013 these should be <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mrpeasy.com\/resources\/user-manual\/stock\/items\/details\/purchase-terms\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\">converted to useful units.<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For discrete items, each one should be accounted for.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It\u2019s smart to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mrpeasy.com\/blog\/software-for-a-food-manufacturer\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\">convert fluids, powders and similar to base units<\/a> (metric or imperial).<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Common pitfall #1: defining the bill of materials per different quantity than the UoM of the item.<br>Common pitfall #2:&nbsp;if a product is in several different packages, then not having separate stock items for non-packaged and packaged products. (Depends on the particular case).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Serial_numbers_and_barcodes\"><\/span>Serial numbers and barcodes<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Serial numbers can be very useful, but not in every situation. While barcodes and serial numbers are cool; logical naming and categorizing together with well-organized warehousing is the first priority.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If there are automatic processes that use serial numbers, then it\u2019s a must-have.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Serial numbers can be assigned <strong>per<\/strong> <strong>stock article<\/strong> (all cans of red dye share one serial number) and <strong>per unique item <\/strong>(each can of red dye has an individual serial number).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For the first case, the serial number will be the part number in MRPeasy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In the second case, firstly a general stock article is created. Then each individual item will be scanned on arrival to stock and have its <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mrpeasy.com\/resources\/user-manual\/settings\/system\/professional-functions\/serial-numbers\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\">serial number<\/a> saved.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.mrpeasy.com\/resources\/user-manual\/settings\/system\/enterprise-functions\/barcodes\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\">Barcodes<\/a> can be generated for printing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Shelf_life_and_expiring_goods\"><\/span>Shelf life and expiring goods<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>It\u2019s not good for business if something expires because it was forgotten. It\u2019s wasted money. If there is no <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mrpeasy.com\/resources\/user-manual\/settings\/system\/professional-functions\/expiry-date\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\">system in place to manage goods<\/a> with an expiry date, there will be more nasty surprises.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Re-ordering_low_stock\"><\/span>Re-ordering, low stock<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Every article should have a critical low value assigned to it, in which case the warehouse manager will get an alert. This is<a href=\"https:\/\/www.mrpeasy.com\/resources\/user-manual\/stock\/critical-on-hand\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\"> critical for preventing surprises and delays in production<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It\u2019s crucially important to figure out the details at the heart of inventory control. This is not only important for consistent supply to manufacturing and good reports to accounting, this is also important for workers to enjoy their jobs more, by giving them the correct tools and avoiding human errors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Having your inventory organized by using MRPeasy, will reduce your inventory levels.
