The steps\nare:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>D<\/strong>efine the problem: Determine the goals,\nresources, and limits for a solution.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>M<\/strong>easure the current process: Collect data on\nthe existing method or system.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>A<\/strong>nalyze the data: Identify the cause of the variations or errors.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>I<\/strong>mprove the process: Modify the methods to\nreduce or eliminate the defect. <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>C<\/strong>ontrol the process: Provide a\nsystem that allows monitoring and adjustments<strong> to prevent similar defects in the\nfuture.<\/strong><strong><\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Six_Sigma_DMADV\"><\/span>Six Sigma DMADV<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>When designing\na new product or service, organizations use the Six Sigma DMADV. It can also be\nuseful in improving existing processes.\nHere\u2019s how DMADV works:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>D<\/strong>efine design standards: Establish methods\nthat support the product and the process goals.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>M<\/strong>easure and identify: Determine which of the\nproduct\u2019s characteristics are critical to quality.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>A<\/strong>nalyze the data: Identify possible sources of\ndefects and develop alternative designs.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>D<\/strong>esign changes: Select the alternative design\nthat will eliminate the source of defects or errors.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>V<\/strong>erify the changes: Ensure that the design\nwill meet the requirements of the project.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Six\nSigma\u2019s bases its success on several strategic principles:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Focusing_on_the_customer\"><\/span>Focusing on the customer <span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Six Sigma is built around an unswerving pursuit of improving quality. First of all, it\u2019s important to define what \u201cquality\u201d means, and it\u2019s essential that the definition comes from the perspective of the customer. Businesses must be measuring quality just as its customers do. If it isn\u2019t, improve the data collection plan and come up\nwith further information.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Data collection includes interviews, observations, and asking\nquestions until there are answers. Use the collected data to find ways to\nimprove or optimize the process by identifying the root cause of the error or variation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Eliminating_variations\"><\/span>Eliminating variations<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>After the root causes have been pinned down, it\u2019s time to make\nchanges that will result in the elimination of disparities and defects and to\ndo away with waste by excluding any steps in the process that do not add any\nvalue for the customer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Rather than waiting for signs of variation, Six Sigma advises\nbeing preemptive in identifying and removing it. By collecting and studying data,\nalong with speaking to anyone that\u2019s involved in the process, it\u2019s possible to find\nissues in the process that were perpetuated merely because they had always been\ndone a certain way.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Taking_responsibility\"><\/span>Taking responsibility<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Six\nSigma is made up of teams and leaders who are willing to take responsibility\nfor the processes. Everyone on the teams must be\ntrained in the Six Sigma methods that include measurement methods and\nimprovement tools. Excellent communication skills are required so they can\nconnect effectively with both customers and coworkers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Teams with members who have an assortment of skills and\nbackgrounds will help the team to spot variations quickly. In a manufacturing\nsetting, workers from maintenance, purchasing, engineering, and production\nwould be excellent choices for the team.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Being_flexible_and_methodical\"><\/span>Being flexible and methodical<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Six Sigma is about flexibility. Not only does management need\nto be receptive to positive changes, but they must also be willing to encourage\nthem. As for the workers, they should be inspired to adapt to them. It\u2019s vital\nthat the benefits of the changes be communicated to all employees so that they\nare more inclined to accept them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>The key to Six Sigma\u2019s success will be the organization\u2019s ability to adopt new procedures as they are needed<\/strong>. In other words, the process required for change should be as uncomplicated as possible so that both management and workers are not so frustrated that they would prefer the broken process to the improved one.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Six Sigma also requires that problem-solving be methodical and thorough. New or updated processes work best when everyone understands each feature of the process, including the steps and the workers who will be involved.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Six_Sigmas_Belt_System\"><\/span>Six Sigma\u2019s Belt System<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Many proponents of Six Sigma believe that one\nof its greatest strengths in managing those who use it might be its belt\nsystem. The system is made up of rankings that are similar to those used in the\nmartial arts. The belt system establishes a\nchain of command among those employees with Six Sigma training. The rankings\nhelp them understand their roles on project teams and what will be expected of\nthem.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>While\nthere are several roles in Six Sigma belt ranking, here are four of the most\nnoteworthy:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Champions<\/strong>&nbsp;are those individuals&#8211;typically from\nupper management\u2014who act as sponsors and leaders to implement Six Sigma\nprojects. <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Master\nBlack Belts <\/strong>have the most\nSix Sigma training and experience in the organization. They maintain a close connection\nwith upper management and provide advice and training to the lower ranking\nbelts.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Black\nBelts<\/strong> are full-time\nSix Sigma professionals who assist in picking Six Sigma projects.
