If your company is unorganized\nand the data is not clean, then the results will be of low quality.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Implement some lean manufacturing\nprinciples; e.g. 5S, or at least aspects of it, should be implemented.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Proper management, good leadership practices, well-designed processes, and a culture of excellence are the gold standards of a successful company. We\u2019ve yet to see a successful company that lacks these standards but makes up for them with great IT solutions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"2_Select_the_right_product_design_CAD_software_for_your_industry\"><\/span>2. Select the right product design (CAD) software for your industry<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Besides just making technical drawings, the design software should be able to perform critical functions specific to your business, like generating bills of materials and production routings.<br>In addition, it should be able to generate or support CNC programs when necessary. These kinds of solutions are called CAD\/CAM, or industry-specific product configurators. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>It is most important that the CAD is industry-specific.<\/strong> Why? It saves a lot of time, prevents mistakes and helps to consistently deliver high quality. In addition, these usually have outputs, which are important inputs for manufacturing planning systems, like BOMs and production routings.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.mrpeasy.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/stock-image-222482988-s-2015.jpg\" alt=\"Industrial-Engineer's-Designing-Turbine-Engine-in 3D-Using-CAD-Program\" class=\"wp-image-2676\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.mrpeasy.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/stock-image-222482988-s-2015.jpg 500w, https:\/\/www.mrpeasy.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/stock-image-222482988-s-2015-300x169.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Product configurators don\u2019t always work exactly like a CAD, where you draw the product, but instead just \u201cconfigure\u201d it by inputting certain parameter values. This, of course, assumes that there\u2019s a certain limit to what\u2019s possible. The output is drawings, BOMs, routings, etc. Using it requires much less skill, training and effort to achieve. Often enough, even though the product technology may be quite complex, the in-house IT department, or local IT-development firm, could program something like this if you don\u2019t find a suitable solution out of the box. <strong>Often enough simpler configurators are included in manufacturing ERP packages<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A very good example of an industry-specific configurator is found in window manufacturing. A<a href=\"https:\/\/www.mrpeasy.com\/product-configurator-software\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"> product configurator<\/a> can be used by the least trained salesmen who just have to enter window parameters, and the software generates drawings, bills of materials and production routings &#8211; fully automatically &#8211; without any necessity for a highly skilled engineer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"3_Check_that_you_have_product_data_management_PDM_functionality_in_place\"><\/span>3. Check that you have product data management (PDM) functionality in place<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>If your company makes complex bespoke products, then a PDM solution is very nice to have, which very often comes together with your CAD, or manufacturing ERP. But there are also 3rd party solutions, systems that organize your engineers\u2019 tasks into a central place. This is where they manage their work, products and design the production process. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Creating a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mrpeasy.com\/blog\/bill-of-materials\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Bill of Materials<\/a> and a list of operations is not yet production planning &#8211; a common misinterpretation &#8211; it\u2019s just part of the product design. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Often, there are many versions of BOMs and\nproduction routings. Some live, others not. Engineering BOMs may greatly differ\nfrom manufacturing BOMs. Engineering change orders might need to be managed. Special\napproval processes might be needed. Change history must be available. This is\nthe purpose of a proper PDM module &#8211; to centrally manage the design aspect of\nthe product. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"4_Select_the_right_manufacturing_ERPManufacturing_Resource_Planning_MRP_software\"><\/span>4. &nbsp;Select the right manufacturing ERP\/Manufacturing Resource Planning (MRP) software<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>A <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mrpeasy.com\/manufacturing-software\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">manufacturing software<\/a> is for planning materials and scheduling production, managing procurement and inventory, and keeping track of sales orders from estimating a quotation until delivered and invoiced. This is the management of the cross-functional and operational side of the business.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For those strong in acronyms, a\nmanufacturing system must contain the following modules to function properly:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong>MRP I, MRP II, or APS<\/strong> \u2013 for planning and scheduling<\/li><li><strong>MES <\/strong>\u2013 for production reporting<\/li><li><strong>WMS <\/strong>\u2013 for <a aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/www.mrpeasy.com\/inventory-management\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">inventory management<\/a><\/li><li><strong>CRM <\/strong>\u2013 for sales management from quotation through fulfillment<\/li><li><strong>SCM <\/strong>\u2013 for procurement management<\/li><li><strong>Accounting <\/strong>\u2013 for financials<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>This is very often the step to which many companies jump directly. While okay in many cases, especially standard products, in other cases not. The common mistake is that on top of what it\u2019s meant for, it\u2019s expected that the <a aria-label=\"MRP system (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/www.mrpeasy.com\/mrp-system\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">MRP system<\/a> is able to excel at the design of the products and production process and management of the engineering data, which is actually the domain of CAD software \u2013 configuration of the products, generation of bills of materials and production routings based on drawings, etc. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Even though some <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mrpeasy.com\/blog\/manufacturing-erp-systems\/\">manufacturing ER<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/www.mrpeasy.com\/blog\/manufacturing-erp-systems\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">P<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/www.mrpeasy.com\/blog\/manufacturing-erp-systems\/\"> systems<\/a> offer quite powerful <g class=\"gr_ gr_3 gr-alert gr_spell gr_inline_cards gr_run_anim ContextualSpelling ins-del multiReplace\" id=\"3\" data-gr-id=\"3\">PDMs<\/g> and configurators (matrix BOMs, parametrical BOMs, BOM version controls, etc.), these can still have some limitations that an industry-specific CAD, PDM, or configurator can overcome with grace.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Why is this only piece number 4? This could mean anything from reporting start-pause-stop of manufacturing operations, reporting consumption of materials, picking of items from stock, shipment, and receipt.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In legacy systems, this is often a module or software that is separately installed on computers on the shop floor. <strong>In modern, especially cloud-based manufacturing systems, the MES is fully built into the manufacturing management system<\/strong>, where shop floor workers simply access the software via the web browser, no matter the device, and not a separate MES application.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Even though this is often part of the\nmanufacturing ERP package, it can still be considered a separate piece because\nshop floor reporting cannot be started before the manufacturing ERP system is\nfairly implemented (which is mostly meant for mid-level management vs.\nfrontline workers).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"6_Integrate\"><\/span>6. Integrate <span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Before going forward with any integration, it\u2019s crucial to understand why and how the integration must be built. Building something \u201cjust in case\u201d is a waste. Some systems may never\nneed to be integrated; others may need to be integrated down the road.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>First, you might have your CAD, configurator, and PDM working together in one silo, and have your MRP, MES, and accounting working in another silo. This is a great place in which to find your company, especially if just coming from spreadsheets.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In this \u2018low-integration\u2019 status:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Your engineering team already has the tools in place to communicate with one another and efficiently design quality products with the least room for human error in the design phase.<\/li><li>Your production management, shop floor, sales, procurement, and stock workers have the tools in place to communicate with each other in real time and build quality products on time.<\/li><li>Your accounting department can get high-quality data about inventory financials, detailed stock movements, product costing, direct labor, cost of goods sold (COGS), etc. from the manufacturing side of the ERP system. The accounting department does not have to gather all data manually, which is a huge bonus.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>The next logical steps are to bring the design and PDM software into contact with the manufacturing system, so the movement of product data is seamless.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In addition, it\u2019s possible to find many other pieces for specific roles, like human resources, e-commerce (which could even be used as a customer portal for B2B), time attendance, general projects management, payroll, employee training software, etc. When your company has found these pieces, the data will seamlessly flow to the central MRP\/ERP and from the MES system so that the right materials will be procured, products manufactured, and delivered to the customer at the right time \u2013 all in one unified system. <\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Choosing the right software to manage a bespoke manufacturing company is a vital step in becoming more efficient and competitive.
