some of the first business\nsoftware to be widely adopted during the 1970s. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>MRP was created initially to supply the <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"Polaris missile program (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Polaris_(UK_nuclear_programme)\" target=\"_blank\">Polaris missile program<\/a>, then, in 1964, as a response to the <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"Toyota Manufacturing Program (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/www.toyota-global.com\/company\/vision_philosophy\/toyota_production_system\/\" target=\"_blank\">Toyota Manufacturing Program<\/a>, Joseph Orlicky developed material requirements planning (MRP) further. The first company to use MRP was <a href=\"https:\/\/hbr.org\/1985\/09\/mrp-jit-opt-fms\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\">Black &amp; Decker<\/a> in 1964. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.accessengineeringlibrary.com\/browse\/orlickys-material-requirements-planning-third-edition\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"Orlicky's 1975 book \u201cMaterial Requirements Planning\u201d (opens in a new tab)\">Orlicky&#8217;s 1975 book \u201cMaterial Requirements Planning\u201d<\/a> has the subtitle \u201cThe New Way of Life in Production and Inventory Management\u201d. It was the first hard cover book on the MRP subject. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>By 1975, MRP was implemented in 700\ncompanies. This number had grown to about 8,000 by 1981.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Manufacturers purchased these systems in order to improve efficiency and accuracy when it\ncame to materials\u2019 planning, ordering process and inventory management.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>By the 1980s, manufacturers realized they\nneeded software that could also plan other company\u2019s important resources \u2013\nmachines. Also, there was added automation of important operations like Quality\nControl, Shop Floor control, and Standard Accounting to gain overview over\nfinancial resources.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Can_I_Still_Buy_MRP_I_Software\"><\/span>Can I Still Buy MRP I Software?<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Legacy manufacturing software vendors (SAP, Epicor, Microsoft, Oracle, IQMS) traditionally offer MRP II, or, actually, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mrpeasy.com\/blog\/manufacturing-erp-systems\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Manufacturing ERP<\/a> functionality.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If to speak about modern, light-weight,\ncloud-based software solutions, there are still many MRP I providers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Though, as MRP II has effectively replaced\nMRP I software, you would be hard-pressed to look for manufacturing software\nthat\u2019s limited to basic material requirements planning. Indeed, most manufacturers\ncan benefit tremendously from the added functionality MRP II systems offer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"What_is_the_difference_between_MRP_II_and_ERP\"><\/span>What is the difference between MRP II and ERP?<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Enterprise resource planning (ERP) software packages\u2019 development was started many decades ago as a financial software initially. Their core module was Accounting (Core Financials) with such parts like General Ledger, Accounts Payable, Accounts Receivable, Cash Management, Fixed assets, etc.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><br><figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"500\" height=\"250\" src=\"https:\/\/www.mrpeasy.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/manufacturing-erp-enterprise-reource-planning-mrpeasy.jpg\" alt=\"manufacturing-erp-enterprise-reource-planning-mrpeasy\" class=\"wp-image-2577\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.mrpeasy.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/manufacturing-erp-enterprise-reource-planning-mrpeasy.jpg 500w, https:\/\/www.mrpeasy.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/manufacturing-erp-enterprise-reource-planning-mrpeasy-300x150.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/figure><br><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Relatively quickly, <a aria-label=\" Inventory (stock) Management (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/www.mrpeasy.com\/inventory-management\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Inventory Management<\/a> module was added, alongside with CRM (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.mrpeasy.com\/manufacturing-crm\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Customer Relationship Management<\/a>), Procurement (Purchasing) and Human Resources (with Payroll module).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If to speak about legacy providers mentioned above, as they started several decades ago, all their <a aria-label=\"ERP software (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/www.mrpeasy.com\/enterprise-resource-planning\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">ERP software<\/a> packages include also Production module.
