It\u2019s also important to note that many companies rely on more than one tool or workflow. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For example, before switching to MRPeasy, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mrpeasy.com\/blog\/success-story-oceanic-saunas\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Oceanic Saunas<\/a> was using a combination of spreadsheets and accounting software to manage production.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">According to our research, here are the most common ways small manufacturers manage their operations before adopting ERP software.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>64% of small manufacturers rely on spreadsheets before switching to an ERP system<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>18% use paper-based systems<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>50% rely on accounting software like QuickBooks or Sage<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>8% have a dedicated inventory management system<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For small manufacturers, managing production using these tools may work well at an earlier stage. However, operational efficiency begins to suffer when order volumes increase, products become more complex, or production schedules become too difficult to manage manually.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Why_small_manufacturers_switch_to_ERP_software\"><\/span>Why small manufacturers switch to ERP software<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The reason a small manufacturer may adopt ERP software varies from business to business.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The most common issue, reported by 74% of small manufacturers, was a <strong>lack of visibility <\/strong>into operations. 54% of small manufacturers said they switched to ERP because they<strong> outgrew spreadsheets<\/strong>. Small manufacturers are rarely looking for ERP software simply for the sake of modernization. Instead, they\u2019re adopting ERP software to solve problems like operational chaos, lack of visibility, and spreadsheets breaking down.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>\u201cSage didn\u2019t have the capacity for production scheduling \u2013 so to that end, we used Microsoft Excel,\u201d says Chris Landen, Managing Director at <\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.mrpeasy.com\/blog\/case-study-mrpeasy-exacta-technologies\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><em>Exacta Technologies<\/em><\/a><em>. \u201cThe manual data inputs made the system prone to mistakes, and we knew it was not scalable; finally, we felt we had reached a limit.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Benefits_of_ERP_implementation_for_small_manufacturers\"><\/span>Benefits of ERP implementation for small manufacturers<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">All clients in our study noted improvements after implementing ERP software, in one form or another. However, benefits vary from business to business and depend on factors like company size, industry, and the specific problems they\u2019re trying to solve. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Here are the most common benefits of implementing ERP software for small manufacturers:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>82% of small manufacturers said that ERP software improved inventory accuracy&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>67% said that production planning time was reduced<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>49% noted an improvement in cost visibility<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>43% reported improvements in lead time accuracy and quoting<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Many ERP systems also include customer relationship management (CRM) functionality, allowing manufacturers to manage customer records, quotes, sales orders, communications, and order histories alongside production and inventory data. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In our research, 36% of small manufacturers reported <strong>increased customer trust<\/strong> after implementing ERP software, while 34% noted<strong> improvements in<\/strong> <strong>customer documentation<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">ERP implementation can also reduce the administrative burden on employees. 81% of small manufacturers in our study said ERP software has significantly <strong>reduced<\/strong> <strong>administrative work<\/strong>. 31% said ERP software has <strong>reduced day-to-day operational stress<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>\u201cEven though it\u2019s still relatively new, the benefits are already incredible. Time savings are enormous; the system makes everything so quick,\u201d <\/em>says Tony Green, Founder of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mrpeasy.com\/blog\/success-story-bradenham-pwc\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Bradenham Preformed Wood Components<\/a>. <em>&#8220;If we\u2019d kept the old system, I don\u2019t know how much time we would have lost scaling up.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Not all benefits were noticed immediately. According to our research, the following ERP implementation challenges are common for small manufacturers:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>25% of small manufacturers cited data cleanup and migration as a major challenge<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>19% mentioned employee resistance&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>17% cited limited time and internal resources&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>17% said that internal alignment across teams made implementation difficult<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Less common challenges included <strong>rebuilding BOMs<\/strong> and the <strong>learning curve<\/strong> when adopting the new system, both of which were reported by 10% of small manufacturers. <strong>Problems with integrations<\/strong> appeared less often, with only 4.3% of small manufacturers mentioning this as a challenge.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Overall, the findings suggest that the primary barriers to successful ERP implementation are data preparation and organizational readiness, rather than software complexity itself.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1000\" height=\"750\" src=\"https:\/\/www.mrpeasy.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/ERP-implementation-challenges.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-22304\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.mrpeasy.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/ERP-implementation-challenges.png 1000w, https:\/\/www.mrpeasy.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/ERP-implementation-challenges-300x225.png 300w, https:\/\/www.mrpeasy.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/ERP-implementation-challenges-768x576.png 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1000px) 100vw, 1000px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"How_long_ERP_implementation_takes_for_small_manufacturers\"><\/span>How long ERP implementation takes for small manufacturers<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">ERP implementation is often associated with long timelines, particularly for large-scale systems such as Oracle and NetSuite. However, cloud-based platforms like MRPeasy can make the process more manageable for small manufacturers, helping reduce implementation time and limit the risk of budget overruns. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Of the 70 customers in our study, 46 reported their implementation timelines. Here\u2019s what we found:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>ERP implementation time ranged from 2 days to 12 months<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The median implementation time was 2 months<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Average implementation time was 14 weeks<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Implementation also largely depends on company size. Larger companies typically need more time for process customization, data migration, and team alignment. They also tend to have more employees to train and more products, parts, and BOMs to manage. Most companies switch to ERP software only after outgrowing spreadsheets, accounting software, paper-based systems, or disconnected legacy systems.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The most common benefits were improved inventory accuracy, reduced administrative work, faster planning, and better cost and lead time visibility. At the same time, the main implementation challenges involved data cleanup, change management, and limited internal resources.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Our findings show that ERP implementation can be manageable when the system fits a company\u2019s size and project scope, data is prepared before going live, and teams are aligned across an organization.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p
